West Indies to play at New Road

It has been announced that the West Indies touring team will take on England ‘A’ at New Road in a One Day game on Thursday 21st June. This would mean the possible return of top one day batsman, Chris Gayle, to the ground where he played as an overseas player.

Chief Executive, Mark Newton, is delighted the County has secured this fixture. “Last year we hosted England ‘A’ v Sri Lanka which proved to be a very high quality match as it meant something to every player. The England ‘A’ players will again want to prove something to the selectors so it should be a very good test for the West Indies. I would expect the match will prove to be a very popular game for our Members and Supporters.”

Other international games to be played at New Road during the season include a County match against Sri Lanka ‘A’ and an U19 Test Match between England and Pakistan. Tickets for all these matches plus all Twenty20 Cup matches are currently available online at www.wccc.co.uk.

Worcestershire v West Indies A

Worcestershire’s thrilling 9 run victory at New Road yesterday marked the first occasion that West Indies A have been beaten by a County side since losing by 6 wickets in June 2002 to Kent.

The home side steamed into a position of strength after a somewhat shakey start, with Roger Sillence (94) and Ray Price (47) registered respective personal best performances with the bat to save the Worcestershire innings from a faltering 70-7 to finish on 213 all out in the 49th over.

Their partnership is a record 8th wicket stand for Worcestershire in limited overs cricket, replacing the previous best of 80 in 1975 against Essex at Chelmsford.

The County’s achievement is particularly pleasing in light of the fact that only 2 of the 11 players in yesterday’s West Indies A side have not had Test or ODI experience: the wicket keeper, Patrick Browne, and the opening batsman, Lendl Simmons.

It is also interesting to note that the last limited overs game West Indies A lost was against England A last winter, where they faced 4 Worcestershire players in the side: Gareth Batty, Steven Davies, Vikram Solanki and Kabir Ali!

Worcestershire plays host to West Indies A

New Road plays host to West Indies A on Sunday 30th July.

Sylvester Joseph will lead the visitors in the fifty over game, which starts at 10.45am.

Four Worcestershire players who took part in the England A tour earlier in the year – Vikram Solanki, Gareth Batty, Kabir Ali and Steve Davies – will be familiar with most of the faces in a strong West Indies A squad, which includes Tino Best, Ryan Hinds and Sewnarine Chattergoon.

St Lucian, Darren Sammy, will no doubt be pleased to receive an extra welcome from his home country’s Tourist Board, who will be on hand to offer spectators a real taste of the Caribbean!

The crowd will be entertained during the interval by a steel band, whilst rum punch and traditional cuisine will be on offer. We are hoping to inject the real spirit of the West Indies into the day’s cricket and one lucky winner will be presented on the day with a Caribbean speciality hamper by a member of the Tourist Board!
