Essex seamer Andrew McGarry sustains hand injury

Essex seamer Andrew McGarry is likely to miss the rest of the season after sustaining a hand injury on day one of the current LV County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

The 25-year-old picked up the injury during his third over in the Nottinghamshire first innings when attempting to field a straight drive from batsman Mark Wagh.

Essex Physio Mark Thomas revealed today:

“Andrew McGarry sustained an impact injury to his right hand yesterday afternoon. An X-ray today has revealed a spiral displaced fracture of his 5th Metacarpal of his right-hand. This will likely require surgery and Andrew will hopefully have this performed in London in the next day or two. As a result he is unlikely to play again this season.”

McGarry rejoined Essex earlier this month on a one-season deal having previously played first-class cricket for the County from 1999-2003.

The Basildon-born cricketer was playing in his third Championship match of the season at Nottingham and his fourth first-class match of the campaign in total.

Essex announced earlier in the week that young fast bowlers Mervyn Westfield and Maurice Chambers have both suffered stress fractures that will prevent them from bowling for much of the remainder of the 2007 season.

However there is brighter news for other Essex bowlers with Darren Thomas (shoulder), Alex Tudor (abdominal strain), Jahid Ahmed (back) and Tony Palladino (abdominal strain) all expected to be pushing for first-team selection in the near future

Meanwhile, Mark Thomas issued the following update on the fitness of Essex Captain Ronnie Irani, who has missed the last two matches through injury.

Thomas said: “Ronnie is waiting for a surgeon’s report on his painful right knee.”

South African Dale Steyn Extends Stay at Warwickshire

After successful negotiations with the South African Cricket Board, Warwickshire CCC are delighted to announce that Dale Steyn’s stay with the club has been extended until the 21st June.

Dale was originally due to leave the Club on 4th June but this extension will allow him to play an additional two Friends Provident Trophy matches against Scotland and Durham and the Liverpool Victoria County Championship match against Worcestershire starting on 15th June.

It also means that if the Bears reach the Semi Final of the Friends Provident Trophy on 20th June he will be available for selection. Dale will then fly over to Ireland on 21st June to join up with the South African squad.

Second overseas signing, Paul Harris will make his first appearance for the Club this season in the first of the Bears Twenty20 matches against Somerset on Friday 22nd June.

Commenting on the announcement, Dale said,”I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Club and am delighted that I’ll be around for these extra fixtures.”

Mark Greatbatch said, “This is great news as Dale has been a fantastic addition to the squad and has been an integral part of our success so far this season.”

Worcestershire Sign Scottish International Dewald Nel

Scottish International Dewald Nel has signed a contract with Worcestershire CCC for the remainder of the season after a successful 10 day period with the Club when he played in the LV County Championship matches against Yorkshire and Lancashire.

He will remain available to play for Scotland in their scheduled ODI’s against Full Member Nations (1st July v Pakistan, 12th July v West Indies and 16th August v India) and the inaugural Twenty20 World Championships in September.

Director of Cricket, Steve Rhodes, says, “Dewald has impressed during the ten days with us. We have some injury problems in the seam bowling department so his signing can only help us whilst giving him an opportunity to establish a career in first class cricket. We will work closely with Scottish Cricket to make sure he is available for their major matches.”

Dewald Nel says, “I am delighted to get this opportunity to play first class cricket and look forward to helping the team have a successful season. The arrangement also allows me to continue with my international duties, particularly the Twenty20 competition in South Africa later this summer.”
