Phillips extends Essex deal

Left-arm spinner Tim Phillips has signed a new two-year contract with Essex that will keep him at the Club until the end of the 2009 season.

The 25-year-old has been rewarded for his most productive season with the County to date, taking the most wickets by an Essex player in the Liverpool Victoria County Championship and playing a major role in winning the NatWest Pro40 Division One title.

A career-best performance in the last home Championship match of the season - 5-41 v Derbyshire - coincided with the award of his county cap.

Phillips told the Essex CCC website:

“At the start of the season my main aim was to get my first-team cap, which I did, but to be given this new contract is another reflection of how I’ve progressed this year.

“Now that I’ve established myself I want to try and push on next season by taking more wickets and scoring more runs and generally improving on what I’ve done this year.

“Hopefully I can still do that with (fellow spinners) Danish Kaneria and James Middlebrook also here and playing for places. It will be good to have Danish back as he’s been great for the Club in the past and hopefully me and Midders can feed off him a bit and maybe the team can get some more silverware in one or two forms of the game.”
