Worcestershire Sign Young Dutch Player

Worcestershire CCC has announced the signing of 17 year old Dutch International, Alexei Kervezee, on a two year contract. Kervezee has already played four ODI’s for Holland including a top score of 47 against Sri Lanka back in July as a 16 year old. He is in their squad for the World Cup in the West Indies early next year. So far he has batted in their middle order and has aspirations to become an all rounder.

Chief Executive, Mark Newton, explains “Alexei came to our attention earlier this year and is a very accomplished and exciting young talent. He came over to trial with the Club and I went to Amsterdam recently to meet with him and his family. We have agreed that he will spend the next two seasons with us where he will benefit from being part of a professional squad. Dare we say there are recollections of a young Graeme Hick in this arrangement!”

Director of Cricket, Steve Rhodes, is equally excited and says “Alexei is very strong for his age and shows remarkable technique at this stage of his development. Both Damian and myself really look forward to working with him over the next two years. He spent the day with the squad during our Natwest Pro40 League match against Surrey to savour the atmosphere and we look forward to seeing him back here next season on a full time basis.”

Alexei Kervezee says “I’m very happy & excited about signing with the Club and am looking forward to learning from such great players & coaches. I have already received such warm & encouraging impressions from everyone - the players, the coaches and the management at Worcestershire CCC.”

Vikram Solanki Extends Contract

Worcestershire County Cricket Club captain, Vikram Solanki, has agreed to a two year extension of his contract taking him through to the end of the 2009 season. Solanki, who has just led the county to a double promotion, has already been awarded a benefit year in 2007.

Worcestershire CCC can further confirm the entire domestic playing squad will remain in contract for the 2007 season. The majority of senior players have existing contracts through to 2007 and 2008 whilst earlier in the season Graeme Hick confirmed a contract extension for 2007.

Local player Daryl Mitchell has agreed a two year extension to his contract until the end of 2008 following a season when he scored his maiden first class hundred (134*) against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay plus a further two half centuries in just 8 first class innings to average 47. Mitchell will once again spend the winter playing grade cricket in Australia.

Left arm medium fast bowler Stuart Wedge (20), wicketkeeper/batsman Josh Knappett (21), fast bowler Richard Jones (20) and off-spinner Shaftab Khalid (23) have all been retained on one year contracts for 2007. Will Gifford and Ed Foster will remain on summer contracts whilst they complete their courses at University.

The County’s Academy intake for 2006/7 is expected to be announced soon.

Moeen Ali Signs for Worcestershire

Worcestershire County Cricket Club is delighted to be able to confirm reports in the Birmingham Post that Moeen Ali has signed a playing contract for the next three seasons.

Chief Executive, Mark Newton, says “We have established a very good relationship with the Ali family over the years. Moeen’s brother, Kadeer, was a player with us and his cousin, Kabir, is one of our senior players. We have a small professional squad so the addition of Moeen is a key part of our planning for the future.”

Director of Cricket, Steven Rhodes, said: “Moeen is one of the outstanding young players in English Cricket at present. We believe that several counties have shown an interest in him but we are delighted he has chosen Worcestershire to pursue his cricketing career and I am sure he will be challenging for a starting spot from the start of next season.”
