Surrey squad to play Leicestershire

Division two leaders, Surrey go into their Liverpool Victoria County Championship match with Leicestershire full of confidence having beaten Essex by six wickets last week at Whitgift.

The winning side is unchanged but Ali Brown has been added to the 12-man squad as cover for an injured James Benning, who has had an old ankle injury flare up again.

Benning suffered the injury while batting in Sunday’s C&G Trophy match with Hampshire at Whitgift and a final decision on his fitness will not be made until Wednesday morning ahead of the match. Initial thoughts from Surrey medical staff are positive and Benning is expected to take his place in the Surrey eleven.

However, should Benning fail to recover in time, Brown will be a worthy replacement, having struck an unbeaten 181 for the second team last week.

Surrey have already played Leicestershire once this season, which resulted in a 99 run victory.

In other injury news, James Ormond is still being troubled by his lower back problem but the second team match against Warwickshire, beginning on Wednesday 12 June, has been pinpointed as his come back date. He has been bowling in the nets over the last week and the build up to full fitness will be gradual.

The full Surrey squad for the Leicestershire match is; Scott Newman, Jonathan Batty (wicket-keeper), Mark Ramprakash, Mark Butcher (captain), James Benning, Rikki Clarke, Azhar Mahmood, Martin Bicknell, Ian Salisbury, Nayan Doshi, Mohammad Akram, Tim Murtagh and Ali Brown.

Graeme Hick Reaches Landmark

When Graeme Hick reached 34 not out against Gloucestershire in last weekend’s Liverpool Victoria County Championship game, he arrived at a significant landmark.

On that precise score, Graeme became only the third cricketer (after Graham Gooch and Jack Hobbs) to reach 60,000 runs across all forms of the game, with 38,591 First Class runs, 20,972 one day runs and 437 Twenty20 runs.

Graeme has served Worcestershire tirelessly for the last 23 season and has just two more centuries to score before he reaches 100 centuries for one county. He would become only the eighth player to achieve the feat, the most recent being Geoff Boycott, who scored 103 centuries for Yorkshire.

Two other important milestones were also reached at Bristol as both Vikram Solanki and Steven Davies struck their way to their career best scores of 222 and 192 respectively.
